The story behind the painting

This painting grew out of time spent walking through my garden, noticing not just individual plants but the way everything overlaps — colour against colour, growth against growth.

The surface is built through energetic layers of mark-making: blocks of colour, repeated shapes, lines and drips that echo stems, pathways, steps and the sense of moving forward through dense planting. Some areas feel playful and spontaneous; others are more structured, creating contrast and visual tension.

Rather than depicting a specific place, Step Through the Garden reflects the sensation of being immersed in a living environment — busy, vibrant, and constantly changing. It celebrates growth, movement, and the joyful chaos found in nature.
