Story Behind the Painting
Nesting was inspired by a tiny treasure I discovered tucked deep into our passionfruit vine—a beautifully woven birds’ nest. I was struck by how nature can be both incredibly simple and wonderfully complex. A bird needs only a safe, hidden place to lay its eggs, yet to achieve that, it creates an intricate structure of twigs, stems and—much to my surprise—shreds of plastic. Perhaps birds are the ultimate recyclers.
Oil and cold wax is the perfect medium for exploring the idea of a nest. Just as birds build up layers, I build up layers of paint and wax, then scrape, carve and reveal what lies beneath. The process creates rich textures and a sense of depth that feels very much like peering into the hidden architecture of a real nest. I use no brushes—only silicon wedges, palette knives and brayers—to mimic the organic, tactile qualities of natural construction.
If you’re drawn to the quiet beauty of nature and the small wonders it hides in plain sight, this piece will speak to you.
