The story behind the painting
Tūī are regular visitors to my garden, and their presence is anything but quiet. Their calls overlap, interrupt, and respond to one another — a constant exchange that feels both chaotic and joyful.
In this painting, that sense of chatter is expressed through layers of colour, pattern, and mark-making. Bold shapes sit alongside finer details; drips, dots, and repeated forms echo the movement of birds hopping, calling, and darting through the space. Hints of bird forms emerge and disappear, allowing the work to sit somewhere between abstraction and suggestion.
Rather than depicting a single moment, Chatterbox Tuis reflects the feeling of being immersed in a living environment — busy, playful, and full of character.
