Story Behind the Painting
Bird Watching is a layered, conversational painting that reveals more the longer you look. What first appears to be a gathering of blackbirds slowly uncovers many more birds hidden within the colours and marks—some so small they could almost be mistaken for flower emblems.
This work explores ageing with vibrancy rather than invisibility. Inspired by a remarkable 94-year-old woman I know—curious, colourful, playful, active and full of joy—I wanted to celebrate the richness that builds with experience.
Instead of beginning with scribbles, I started this painting with words: negative age-related terms I reject, then positive ones layered over the top. If you look closely, you’ll eventually find uplifting words such as Experience, Wise, and Active subtly embedded in the surface.
Pathways, steps, fences and pink roses create a park-like setting, while textured “reserved” areas hint at the depth, character and lived stories that come with age.
A joyful, thought-provoking piece—inviting you to pause, look deeper, and celebrate a life lived boldly.
